2006 Rally
OverviewThe past year, the Second Annual Muscle Car 1000 began with an opening night gala at the incomparable Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara. Over the course of the next five days, we visited Morro Bay, Avila Beach, San Simeon, Paso Robles, Pebble Beach, Monterey, San Francisco and Napa Valley. Our accommodations included some of the best hotels and resorts in America including the Mandarin Oriental, the Monterey Plaza, the Vintage Inn and the Four Seasons Biltmore. We enjoyed wine-maker dinners at Merryvale's famous Cask Room, and Eberle's Cave Room. To top it off, entrants were invited to drag race at Infineon Raceway, tour the famed 17 Mile Drive, and enjoy private tours of Hearst Castle and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. As an added bonus, numerous magazines, and Speedvision's Dream Car Garage covered the rally.

Day 1 – September 25, 2006
The Second Annual Muscle Car 1000 was held September 25th to September 30th 2006. Twenty-five teams converged upon the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, CA for the opening night Gala held in the Grand Rotunda Room. Veterans from the Inaugural Rally returned in force, and the room erupted with laughter as each team was introduced and shared a little history about their cars and co-drivers.

Day 2 – September 26, 2006
Day 2 began with a drivers meeting followed by a spectacular drive up Highway 1. Lunch was held out over the Pacific Ocean on the Pier in Avila Beach. Participants were encouraged to drive their cars on the pier which made for some incredible photos! After lunch, we continued up to coast to Hearst Castle in San Simeon for a private event and tour. After a memorable experience, we headed to Atascadero and the historic Carlton Inn. That evening, cocktails and a wine maker’s dinner were held inside the caves of the Eberle winery in Paso Robles.

Day 3 – September 27, 2006
Day 3 opened with a stunning drive up to the world famous Pebble Beach Resort. After lunch in the library, looking out over the famed 18th hole, everyone hoped in their cars and toured the world famous 17-mile drive through Pacific Grove, Carmel and Monterey. Our tour wound its way up the coast to San Francisco and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. We enjoyed a cocktail reception on the 40th Floor looking down on San Francisco and the Bay. Dinner was served at 8:00 PM. By 10:00 PM most of the teams headed to the bar for drinks and camaraderie.

Day 4 – September 28, 2006
Day 4 started off with a spirited drive to Infineon (Sears Point) Raceway in Sonoma, CA. Drag racing was the name of the game, and the participants enjoyed taunting and racing each other for several hours! As the racing and lunch service concluded participants jumped in their cars and headed over the hill to Napa Valley and the Vintage Inn. That evening, we enjoyed a private winery tour followed by a multi-course wine maker’s dinner in Merryvale’s Historic Cask Room.

Day 5 – September 29, 2006
Day 5 included a beautiful drive down the coast to Monterey and the incomparable Monterey Plaza Resort. That evening, participants were given a private tour of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A stunning dinner followed, as the participants enjoyed course after course in front of the world famous “Kelp Forest”.

Day 6 – September 30, 2006
Day 6 the participants embarked on a relaxing drive down the coast. Highway 1 is perched high along the cliffs looking down on the Pacific, and spectacular ocean views could be found around every corner. At the halfway point, we arrived at the Inn at Morro Bay for a picturesque oceanfront luncheon. Three hours later, we arrived in Santa Barbara and the Four Seasons Biltmore. After a little down-time, the teams gathered for the Second Annual Muscle Car 1000 awards banquet. Larry Macks took Best of Show honors with his flawless 1971 Buick GS Stage 1 Convertible. Michael Hammer won the Peoples Choice Award with his 1966 Shelby Cobra 427, and Tom Rhein’s 1965 Chevy was crowned drag race champion.
